procrastination…

i have left this blogging thing to last because not only have i been looking at other things to compare on facebook and myspace and youtube. but ive realized that i cant really blame the websites. mainly i blame my brain for learning all this stuff about them.

so i took the time to post up bulletins at 3 am in the morning or play a game at 2 am the next night. or i stayed on facebook chat for 3 hours catching up with someone. and i still hadnt come up with anything. i know i already talked about this. so we take the time to change our picture. we take our lap tops to class and procrastinate. i know people who have spent hours changing their myspace background and html codes. and then it comes down to the final deadline. the project u left to the last minute. do you blame the website that someone created or do you blame yourself???

i blame myself.

Try to think back before the internet was popular. For most people, we were probably around our pre-teen or early teen days when email started becoming a more popular way of communication. Next was the chat rooms, then instant messagers, and then Myspace. This branched off into Facebook, YouTUbe, Many blogging sites, and most recetly, Twitter. what is our obsession with the internet? I know people (including myself) that can literally spend hours at a time on the computer. Most of the time there isn’t that much to do. People constantly writing how BORED they are to be on the computer, yet continue to stay on.

Why are people so addicted? Especially now with the advances in cell phones. When you’re not at home, Myspace and Facebook are still at your fingertips. I find myself either browsing through pointless videos or looking at pictures. It is so distracting. I think of all that I could have accomplished if I put even HALF the amount of time and effort i spend on the internet, doing something else..I would have done a lot more.

Because I do a lot of digital artwork, I spend a lot of time on my computer doign that. But i always seem to drift over to my internet browers and click on my favorites tab at the top taking me to my favorite websites. Many times when people will come over and want to see something ive made on my computer, I will turn it on, and right away I open the internet and click on Myspace.com. I do this without even thinking. Then it clicks in..wow what a bad habbit!! its like I did it subconsiously.

Have we really let the internet take over us? Do we spend excessive amounts of times waiting for our inbox to say “1 new message” or “1 new comment”?? i think it most certainly is an addiction, but most people tend to just ignore it.

This whole Status Update has taken the nation by storm with online communication. Its like a “mini blog” for people to be very straight forward with their ideas at the time. Something intersting Ive noticed is how people communicate with eahother using these updates alone. Although Myspace and Facebook allow commenting and sharing messages, people would rather put their information for all to see. For example, Ive noticed people fighting with one another over their Status update. One will say something like “You are so annoying…get a life…” and another will say “Im so over you, im in love with someone else”

Status updates like this are kind of confusing because they seem to not be directed toward any particular person, but to the person they might be in conflict with will know exactly to whom these messages are directed. Once I had called a friend of mine and he didnt answer. A few minutes later I had updated my status as “Annoyed” but it had nothing to do with him not answering. A few minutes later he called me back saying “I saw your update, are you annoyed cuz I didnt answer?”

I feel people are so used to this method of impersonal communication, that it leads people to be more insecure about who this person is really talking about. As opposed to sending them a direct message saying “hey im annoyed with you”, they would rather leave it for all to see, making people wonder as to what is really going on.

do you think that updating your status can start an online war with others?

I first of all would like to say how much I love youtube. For years I had looked for free websites that provided somewhere I could post videos to share with friends, and when You Tube finally came out, it became the biggest success for video sharing. What do people post on YouTube? Just about anything you can think of.

It made me think of how information is transmitted and how this has changed the world. Think back to the days we can only read about in history. It would take days to transfer information from 1 location to the next. THe pony express and “snail mail” as we commonly call it today, was simply a way to transfer text, and photos. Keeping in touch with someone that lives clear accross the state, country, or even world would be a very basic and slow form of communication.

There are some examples of why I found You TUbe to be really cool. First of all, The president Obama has a You TUbe account where he will put videos giving speeches, communicating things going on politically to the public. It gives people a better way to connect with politics. Another thing is to keep up with all the gossip going on. With websites like TMZ.com, it is the perfect way to get the dirt on your most loved celebrity figures. Many celebrities now use their own cameras to film themselves talking to their fans and it helps build their fan base and connect on a closer level. It lets Musuicans promote their music to get people interested and excited about their new songs. Last but not least it gives everyone an opportunity to showase their lives to those around them. I recently attended a concert on Sunday, and i wasnt able to stand in the very front and was ticked off because i was unaware of how this arena was layed out. To my surprise, the very next day people had uploaded video footage that had been in the front row onto You TUbe.

I think it provides a way of communication amongst all people . You tube does not discrimiate as to whom can sign up. They have copyright rules and such, but they provide a freedom that no other website had achieved before

Back in the day, like the beginning of high school, in 2003 i suppose, everyone was getting a myspace. So we all learned how to use html codes, post up pictures of ourselves on the internet and make a profile. But it was more like a web page to show other people what we like and dont like and what represents us. It was simple, you could comment, you could add songs and pictures. There were no applications, no “friends in common” options, and you had to be 13 or over to create an account. Then facebook came along and changed everything. Applications, status updates, “like” buttons, and fan pages! And myspace decided to copy them, im sure they were scared they would lose their fan base. Crazy as it sounds, we like complicated things. Facebook changed the outline of their site twice since ive made one, each more confusing than the other.

ps. i still cannot get over the fact that it has a phonebook and if u need peoples numbers it might just be there. myspace still doesnt have that, i wonder what will happen when they do.

I recently got a twitter account. Personally i dont see what all the fuss is about. This is the ironic part though, people say twittering is “stalkerish” but in its defense, its not. Facebook is stalker ish. We post up pictures and everything else from our lives on there. With twitter, you dont have to tell people EVERYTHING.. well you dont have to with facebook either but we do it. Another thing, you dont get to write a full biography on twitter. Its like 20 words or less. So twitter is not the stalker everyone thinks it is, just because you can follow someone. You can do that with facebook. It has a phonebook and you can add your friends. If you have facebook mobile, your friends status updates get sent to your phone.

In conclusion, there is no such thing as privacy on the internet.

I’ve heard some things about Myspace violence and have a brief memory of it being addressed on Dr. Phil (not that I was watching Dr. Phil), so I thought I’d look around to see if I could find any further information on it. I found an article on www.bloomberg.com that says this:

“Sex, drugs and violence mark the majority of MySpace.com postings by 18-year-olds, a study found, potentially hurting job prospects and drawing sexual predators.

In a search of 500 publicly accessible MySpace profiles, 54 percent had items on risky behavior, such as sexually explicit images, text about killing people, or hobbies that included marijuana use and alcohol, said the authors of the research in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

Teens often don’t realize that such information may attract sexual predators or repel employers, said Kimberly Mitchell, a researcher at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. One in seven kids is sexually solicited online and those posting sex information about themselves are at greater risk, she said.”

This is where social networking sites prove to be dangerous. It’s risky to put information out there when there are people who are waiting to discover those who are vulnerable. It would be so easy for a sexual predator to target a girl who relentlessly posts comments about being lonely and wanting to be loved. Often times, kids and teenagers don’t know where to draw the line between posting updates on their lives and posting information that is just too personal to be public domain. This might be where the “private” setting comes in use which allows only those who are your “friends” to view your page. That device might be employed in the hopes that Myspace users will be discerning of who to be friends with. This is also an instance that I think begs for parent involvement. How many kids would post sexually explicit images, text about killing people, or hobbies that include marijuana and alcohol if they knew their parents were able to see that on their pag? I’m not in favor of parental over-protectiveness, but I do support parental involvement to the point of a parent knowing what a child is advertising about himself. Myspace can be a dangerous thing if it is used carelessly.

I thought it would be interesting to include some statistics about Facebook in order to demonstrate how the site is doing in terms of success. So here it goes…

More than 200 million active users

More than 100 million users log on to Facebook at least once each day

More than two-thirds of Facebook users are outside of college

The fastest growing demographic is those 35 years old and older

Average user has 120 friends on the site

More than 3.5 billion minutes are spent on Facebook each day (worldwide)

More than 20 million users update their statuses at least once each day

More than 4 million users become fans of Pages each day

About 70% of Facebook users are outside the United States

The fact that Facebook has 200 million active users is insane to me. Facebook has really become a part of our society, and I’d even venture to say that it is now a vital resource in defining our society. It has provided faster, more efficient ways of connection for people all around the world and has contributed to and been influenced by our “instant gratification” mentality. I also think it encourages the idea of the individualistic culture that has become so prevalent in America because it is YOUR own web page that is devoted to promoting YOU and why YOU are important and how YOU are different and unique. YOU and everyone else. We’re all just a pair of ripped jeans.

I thought it couldn’t get any worse. But it just did. I found THE social networking site of social networking sites. It’s called Second Life…and it does just that- creates for you a second life. Here’s its mission statement: “Second Life is a free online virtual world imagined and created by its Residents. From the moment you enter Second Life, you’ll discover a fast-growing digital world filled with people, entertainment, experiences and opportunity. We are a global community working together to build a new online space for creativity, collaboration, commerce, and entertainment. We strive to bridge cultures and welcome diversity. We believe in free expression, compassion and tolerance as the foundation for community in this new world.” Umm…why are we provided with an alternate reality that hosts these things? Is real reality not good enough? Can these things not exist in real life? I think it is substantial enough that our world is filled with people, entertainment, experiences, and opportunity. We have the real opportunity to participate in free expression, we can choose to act with compassion and tolerance as well as bridge cultures and welcome diversity. All of these things are available to us in the real world, so why do we feel the need to create and participate in an alternate reality that provides these things? It seems like this site’s goal is to discourage participation in real life and encourage a solely online existence. It even provides relief from our economy as it says “Learn about the Second Life economy, where Residents can earn real money in a virtual world.” And I think the worst thing of all is that it provides all-too-easy and unrealistic solutions to real-life dilemmas, thus encouraging the shedding of one’s real life in order to replace it with this alternate reality that ultimately provides an “easy button” for any of life’s problems. To illustrate my point, I discovered this in the FAQ section: “What if someone annoys me in Second Life? Can I mute them? Yes. Like real life, you may encounter people in Second Life that you wish to ignore. Unlike real life, in the Second Life virtual world there is a simple button that you can click to mute them. If only real life were that easy.” How horrible is that? It’s like encouraging a two-year-old to throw a tantrum every time he doesn’t get what he wants instead of teaching him problem solving skills. Honestly, what is the need for a site like this? If anyone can point out some positive or beneficial aspects, I am more than willing to listen. Go check it out at www.secondlife.com.

I recently read an article in the Los Angeles Times called “Save us from ourselves online.” It was talking about the fact that there is so much available information online that we are each given the freedom to be our own editor, and we select the kind of news and opinions that we care most about. The author says, “We generally don’t want good information- but rather information that confirms our prejudices…I’m sometimes guilty myself of selective truth-seeking on the Web. The decline of traditional news media will accelerate the rise of The Daily Me [his clever name for the way we only pay attention to what we want to hear], and we’ll be irritated less by what we read and find out wisdom confirmed more often. The danger is that this self-selected ‘news’ acts as a narcotic, lulling us into a self-confident stupor through which we will perceive in blacks and whites a world that typically unfolds in grays.” There is now so much information out there that it’s easy to find something that confirms your pre-existing view and even easier to avoid anything that disagrees with your view. The article also says that “one 12-nation study found Americans the least likely to discuss politics with people of different views, and this was especially true of the well-educated….the result is polarization and intolerance…for example, some liberals in one study initially worried that action on climate change might hurt the poor, while some conservatives were sympathetic to affirmative action. But after discussing the issue with like minded people for only 15 minutes, liberals became more liberal and conservatives more conservative.” Is it true that excess of information has contributed to close-mindedness and intolerance? One aspect of the Post-Modernist age is that we gather only information that confirms our pre-existing viewpoint, thus confirming our sub-culture. We may say we like diversity, but we live in cliques more so than in previous times. To what extent has the internet contributed to this?
